The strain is defined as the change in dimensions of any stationary object because of externally applied force. The phenomenon of the strain gauge is based on the resistivity property of the metal of that the strain gauge is made. The electric resistivity increases or looses with the stretching of the metal. Applications of the strain gauge
The strain gauges are used in organizational load-bearing units to measure stresses parallel to load paths for wing divergence or distortion in an airplane. The strain gauges are fitted into Wheatstone Bridge circuits. The application areas include onboard signal control units, stimulation of power supplies. It records and transmits the readings of instruments.
To take preventive measures, bridge monitoring is done during bridge construction. Regular monitoring of bridges is unavoidable for any type of distortion as it can lead to lethal casualties. Pinpoint inspections are done by strain gauges for various parts of bridges to avoid any kind of failure.
Strain gauges are being used for a long time in rail safety. Strain gauges measure axial tension and compression. In case of emergency, strain gauges send alert signals to minimize the impact on rail traffic.
TORQUE AND POWER MEASUREMENT
