Since 2010, YouTube has released a recap video called YouTube Rewind that highlights the platform’s popular creators, trends, and memorable events.
Due to how trying this year has been for many, the annual tradition is at a halt and the platform has decided to not go forward with the production of YouTube Rewind 2020. The company made a statement that it would not feel right to go on as if this year has been normal.
YouTube’s decision has caused many people on the platform to voice their mixed opinions.
While some creators believe that the platform’s decision was the right move, others believe that YouTube should make a recap highlighting all of the positives that have come from 2020.
Regardless of their opinions, many people are left wondering what the recap would look like if YouTube decided to make a recap.
Let’s Get Through the Hard Stuff First
Understandably, YouTube probably decided to scrap the 2020 rewind because it is so difficult to make something good out of something so tragic. But it’s all about perspective.
It would be a shame for the platform to not acknowledge the tragic global impact that COVID-19, natural disasters, and social injustices have had this year. At the same time, this could have been a great opportunity to highlight how each hardship has brought communities, families, and individuals together, even from a distance.
Celebrity deaths did not make this year any easier to go through. But instead of YouTube focusing on how devastating the deaths of Kobe Bryant, Chadwick Boseman, Alex Trebek, and unfortunately many more were, they could have highlighted how great of an athlete Kobe was, how talented Chadwick was, and how intelligent Alex was.
Even though all of this information is hard to be reminded of, they raise awareness of what is happening in our communities and more importantly teach us to value ourselves and each other because of how unpredictable life is.
2020 Brought Some Positives
Everyone can agree that 2020 has been an eventful year, but not every event has been tragic. If anything, they have been a breath of fresh air- and caused a lot of viral videos.
Working From Home
At the beginning of March, millions of people made a sudden transition from working and learning in their typical environment to having to do it all at home.
With people dressing from success from the waist up, relying on their webcams, and spending extra time with their furry friends, many funny, cute, and sweet moments were captured.
Picking Up a New Hobby
It’s no surprise that people who were stuck at home for over half the year have picked up new hobbies along the way. While some people have thrived, others should just stick to their day job.
As days in quarantine moved along and people’s hair started to grow out, some took it upon themselves to become at-home hairdressers. Hopefully, their mistakes have grown out by now.
Others have become gardeners, bakers, interior designers, and even… broadway producers? Some even became experts in fixing their mobile devices and learning how to perform an iPad repair, so that they can fix their entire family’s fleet of electronics.
More Great News
There is so much more great news that YouTube Rewind could have highlighted.
